Downing Onyxia 2.0 – Quel’Serrar Included

So after wiping on Onyxia with three different PUGs yesterday I had some slight reservations about future PUGs. But, upon hearing the call for a tank, I could not resist.

I must admit I entered the place with the full expectation to wipe at least two times before maybe killing her. I put some emphasis on Deep Breath and where you should stand, and that everyone gathered in the middle for the whelps in phase two (like I pointed out in my last post). It was an experimental tactic since I had never done it, but turns out it worked very well.

Whelps got AoE’d down, adds got tanked and killed on time for the next, ranged DPS kept the nukage up on Onyxia, and before we knew it (I checked her health and noticed 41%, at which point I, who was still tanking one of the Lair Guards, in absence of a better word, shit my pants) she was down and looking very pissed. I rushed over to her, still dragging my Lair Guard screaming and kicking with me, and tanked her up to a wall. And not the good spot straight across the entrance, but right next to the entrance. I couldn’t remember that Onyxia used to land over here, but do I dare drag her over to the normal spot through the raid fighting whelps? No, not really.

And here I should share a little anecdote. Shortly after I joined the guild I would spend the rest of my WoW time with (I’m not actually playing in it any longer, but I still hang around the website – which I created by the way) there was a LAN held for the guild. Mostly people from Sweden but also people from all across Europe. My orc warrior had just dinged 60, could have been the day before or maybe even at the LAN, I don’t remember exactly. For some reason I got a place in the Zul’Gurub raid and joined for our first Hakkar kill. Ensue much cheering (alcohol consumption was practiced) and people standing up clapping hands. But that was nothing compared to when the guild (but not me, attunements you know) went in and downed Onyxia for the first time. During the last percent people where standing up screaming (mostly at the MT who was sitting shaking and sweating) and when she finally went down you could have heard the screaming from a mile away.

Memories from that event were in my mind as I was tanking that bitch through the last percent. And you could tell from the chat that I was not the only one excited. Down she went, and my smile probably reached the ears by that time.

Ah, and yes, of course she dropped the Gleaming Quel’Serrar, the most iconic tanking sword of vanilla WoW. Thunderfury was better, but you didn’t see that as often as Quel’Serrar.
