So I leveled two different chars – one alliance and one horde – to 80 with a very short time between. The process was painless on both, but one thing nagged me while I was leveling the Druid: lore.
While both sides had plenty of lore during the quests the alliance quests had a TON more for a lore junkie like me. I played Warcraft III and its expansion, so any reference to noticeable characters makes me squeal like a girl. Or well, not really that much, but you get the idea. I like lore.
So imagine my surprise after having leveled a horde character to 80 in Northrend when I stumble across a quest in Dragonblight with my alliance Druid… and it was nothing less than when Arthas found Frostmourne, with a scene and all! Muradin read that the blade was cursed, and Arthas drew the sword (the bastard) and Muradin was slain. Arthas leaves the cave with Frostmourne in hand, leaving Muradin dead on the cold ground.
So far all according to The Frozen Throne.
Then Muradin gets up. Mumbles something like “Who am I?” and runs off.
No. Way.
My mouth was seriously forming an O and I had trouble understand the implications of this. Muradin survived? Why didn’t I know anything about this on my Horde character? At this point I just break down and read what actually happened to him on WoWWiki, but if it wasn’t for this quest I would forever think that Muradin was dead. Imagine my surprise when he pops out during the Arthas boss encounter and gives a hand? The hell?
I played Horde in The Burning Crusade so I know we had our share of famous people there, like Rexxar. Was this way to remedy the Alliance some sweet juicy lore they had missed?
Aside from that there also is an Alliance quest in Dragonblight where you free the ghosts of Arthas expedition who never understood how he betrayed them. The scene from The Frozen Throne (with the same voices and everything) was also a lore feast.
And not to forget the quest where you help battle a lich at the bottom of a crypt in Wintergarde, and get assistance from no less than Bolvar Fordragon. That in itself was not so remarkable; but that he pointed out that he remembered my help when we revealed Onyxia in Stormwind Keep… my love for the quest designers knew no limits.
The same thing with Gryan Stoutmantle (now Commander) of the “Westfall Brigade” in Grizzly Hills. He thanked me for my help in Westfall (by clearing Deadmines), but couldn’t remember what quest reward I picked.
Nostalgia.
I don’t know if I was half-sleeping when I leveled my Horde character, but I can’t remember any scene of importance where I paused and sent a prayer to the quest designers like I did several time with my Druid.

/ August 19, 2009If you’ve read wowwiki you’ve probably seen it, but as alliance you can look forward to seeing more than one bronzebeard brother if you quest in Storm Peaks…and find out where Muradin went after he revived.

/ August 19, 2009Yes it spoiled it a bit for me, but then I didn’t have to do much of Stormpeaks before I hit 80. And when you’re 80 you just cant be arsed to do all those quests when you could do daily quests for half the effort and twice the reward.
